A Review of Faith and Pop Culture

After reading Christianity Today’s study series Faith and Pop Culture, I can honestly say that I feel as if we, as Christians, have given up.  It seems as if the contributors to this project (all chosen by Christianity Today) want to see just how close to the edge of sin a Christian can be and still be “okay” in God’s eyes.  Instead of seeing how Christ-like we can become, this book seemingly encourages the Christian to see how worldly we can become and still wear the badge “Christian.”  In the chapter about movies, the article written by the movie reviewer suggested that we, as Christians, should not base our cinematic judgment on R-ratings or even on nudity, excessive violence, or bad language.  It was suggested that those were just realistic views of the sinful world we live in, and that we should embrace the wickedness and view it as good, realistic cinematic work.  As a conservative Christian, this book was written from the exact opposite viewpoint of that which I hold.  While I understand that there is sin and wickedness (even explicitly documented in the Scriptures) in this world, I do not believe it is our job, as Christians, to applaud it and conform to it.  Overall, I would not recommend spending money on this book.  It’s a typical publication from Christianity Today.
